ROSTERS

A roster is a text file which includes all of the players in a specific team’s squad, all of each player’s attributes and their statistics for the current season.

Here is an example of a player taken from my example roster file (wrapped for web viewing):

This file will explain all of the player stats mentioned above, in the example.

PLAYER INFORMATION

A player’s age and nationality are placed in this section to demonstrate that while they are necessary in the roster, they are not used by the ESMS engine and used for the sake of statistics.

Age: This helps to find a player’s age. This can distinguish certain types of players, such as youth players or old players, which fall under special rules.

Nat: This refers to a player’s nationality in a three-letter abbreviation.

PLAYER SKILLS

The player has four skill ratings: shot-stopping, tackling, passing and shooting. These determine how well the player can play in each position. The skill ratings can be anywhere between 1 and 20. The higher the skill rating, the more suited the player is to that position. Skill ratings are affected by a player’s ability points, which are explained later. If any player reaches 21 in one of his skills, that one point will be taken away and diverted to another skill at random.

St: This refers to a player’s shot-stopping rating, to prevent shots from going into the goal. This finds how useful goalkeepers will be. For this skill only, outfield players normally don’t have more than 1 or 2 as a shot-stopping rating.

Tk: This is the tackling rating, which determines the player’s ability to tackle attackers and stop scoring chances. Mainly used for defensive players.

Ps: This is the passing rating, which determines how well a player can create chances for his team. This rating is mainly used for midfield players.

Sh: This is the shooting rating, which determines the player’s ability to score from chances given to him. Mainly used for forwards.

Ag: This determines the level of aggression by a certain player. This rating can be from 1 to 100.  The higher the aggression of the player, the more determination the player will have to try to win a game. However, this could result in more fouls being committed and the player having a worse disciplinary record as a result. The aggression rating does not change during a player’s career.

ABILITY POINTS

Ability points will go up and down through the course of a season according to how the player performs in matches. The ability points for keeping, tackling, passing and shooting have a range of 0 to 1000, with the specific skill increasing by one point if it rises to 1000, or if the ability points reach 0, then that skill will decrease by one point. In either case, that skill’s ability points will be reset to 300.

Kab: This ability rating refers to a player’s shot-stopping ability points, and only goalkeepers will have this rating change through the season. Kab will increase if the player makes a save that stops a shot from going into the goal, or decrease if he concedes a goal.

Tab: This ability rating counts up the player’s tackling ability points. This will increase if a player makes a key tackle that prevents an opponent from a scoring chance.

Pab: This ability rating measures the player’s passing ability points. This will increase if a player makes a key pass that creates a scoring chance or even further (25 points) if there is an assist, which is a pass that actually makes a goal.

Sab: This ability rating refers to the player’s shooting ability points. Simply, a shot will increase the shooting ability of a player, and any goals scored will increase the player's shooting ability by 25 points.

STATISTICS

Statistics are updated at the end of every match by the league administrator, and sent back to the managers. Match statistics will be added to the roster sheet, and any injuries or suspensions currently on the roster will be decreased by one week until the player can return to action.

Gam: This refers to the amount of matches played during the season by the player, which includes both start and subsititute appearances.

Sub: This refers to the amount of games that the player is a substitute and does make an appearance. Substitutes not called on during a match are not included.

Min: The total of minutes played during the season by the player.

Mom: Amount of man of the matches for the player.

Sav: Refers to the amount of saves a goalkeeper has made.

Con: The amount of goals conceded by a player during his matches. Applies only to goalkeepers.

Ktk: Refers to the amount of times a player has prevented an opponent making a goalscoring opportunity.

Kps: Refers to the amount of passes that a player has made that leads to his team having a goalscoring opportunity.

Sht: Refers to the amount of shots made by the player, whether they were on or off target.

Gls: Refers to the amount of goals scored by the player throughout the season.

Ass: Refers to passes made by the player that have led to their team scoring a goal. This is called an assist.

DP: This refers to the amount of disciplinary points that the player has collected throughout the season. This will come from any yellow or red cards given to the player during matches. 4 points are given to the player for a yellow card, and 10 points for a red card. A player will be banned for one match for EACH 10 points accumulated.

Inj: If a player has sustained an injury during a match, he will be out of action for a designated amount of weeks. If the number here is more than 0, the player will not be available for that amount of weeks. Each weekend counts as a week completed for the PBESL. At the end of the season, all injury numbers will be put back to 0, meaning all players will be available for the new season.

Sus: This shows how many games the player will be suspended based on the amount of disciplinary points that have been accumulated by the player.

Fit: This is the level of fitness the player has at the moment. At 100%, the player is performing at his maximum potential. Sometimes, players will not be at 100% fitness because they have played a high level of games, which may require the manager to rest that player for a match to regain full fitness.

PLAYER POSITIONS

A player in the ESMS engine won’t have a pre-defined position. The manager must decide where the player should be playing according to the player’s ratings and the manager’s own tactical considerations. The ESMS system includes 4 possible on-field positions, and the allowed amount of players in the PBESL league will also be added into the following:

GK: A goalkeeper, only 1 allowed to play at the same time

DF: A defender, from 3 to 5 players are allowed to play at the same time.

MF: A midfielder, from 3 to 5 players are allowed to play at the same time.

FW: A forward, from 1 to 3 players are allowed to play at the same time.

“ACTUAL” SKILLS

As mentioned above, a player will play with 4 different skills plus his level of aggression. These are designated as his RAW SKILLS, and because the player will tire throughout the course of a match, he won’t always play with those exact same level of skills as the match progresses. An ACTUAL SKILL refers to the player’s raw skill that is modified after some calculations by the game engine, which depends on team tactics and the player’s fatigue during a match.

It is important to remember that the better raw skills a player has, the better actual skill he will have, too. Also, the aggression rating will not change during the match.

Actual skills will affect how skills are used. For example, a defender will hardly ever use the potential of his shooting rating, so he has very little chance to score. Tactics can also affect the actual skills of a player to some degree, but a player who plays in his “preferred” position will best make use of his raw skill. Most players have one high-level skill with two medium-to-low skills, but some may specialise in more than one skill, whose versatility could be priceless in some situations.
